As you may have seen from our social media channels we have under gone a huge refurbishment at the shop over the past 5 weeks, we would like to show you our new one of a kind custom built training station.
We felt that face painting training is a huge commitment for any face painter and felt that we need to upgrade from the regular tables and chairs. We couldn’t find anything on the market that we felt was good enough for our training courses, so put our builders to work and commissioned them to make our very own stylish and practical training station.
It features 10 work stations, each with its own makeup mirror and high directors makeup chairs, every station has draws packed full of products ready to be used and learned with.
It’s also the perfect place to sit and try and test products when you come to the shop, we all love to try different colours before we buy them and now we have the perfect place for you to sit and do exactly this.
We are extremely pleased with the new training station and look forward to welcoming everyone on our amazing workshops this year.
We have to say a huge thank you to Baseline Building for creating such a perfect addition to our shop.
I would like to start off by wishing you all a very Happy New Year, 2016 is set to be a great year for face and body painters – I can feel it in my bones :-)
I am not really one for making New Year’s resolutions (mainly because I have learned that I normally break them within a week or two) however this year I have set myself some goals and I am going to do my best to stick to them.
The first being – to use Periscope to its full potential, if you don’t have the Periscope App – download it on your phone, its available on Apple and Android for free. It’s a live streaming app so you can show your followers what you are up to – Great idea ah? Well yes - unless you are like me and HATE speaking on any type of video or live stream.
I once had a customer tell me over the phone that everyone hated my Essex accent and that has put me off ever since then, BUT no more, love it or hate it – it’s what I have been given so you guys are going to be hearing a whole lot more of my Essex twang – lucky or what?
This year I am going to try and overcome my fears of talking on camera and take over the world of Periscope (that’s a little ambitious even for me) haha
You can follow our Periscope here >https://www.periscope.tv/thefacepaintingshop
My second being to make tme to make more Youtube videos, I have so many ideas and this year I am going to get them out of my head and get them on to You Tube so keep posted on our chanel > https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWmeKZuMfnITvsWKm5jzONw
Happy New Year guys <3

Huge thank you To Sally Ann Lynch, who has created these amazing Christmas face painting designs, using her Training Tried and Tested Boards.
Hi all, thought it was time to do a blog about my boards as there appears to be a lot of interest in them since May this year.
You may know them under the name Training Tried & Tested or simply know them as the Sally-Ann boards. Either way they make the perfect tool for practicing and displaying your face painting.
They have been through quite a few changes since first being released in May as I personally felt that they need a little tweaking and I went away and worked with a few professionals in the industry and with the help of my ‘friendly face painting forum I run which currently has over 1200 members, I think we came up with the perfect collection of boards!
So to my background! I started painting over 12 years ago and fell in love with this wonderful art form and through this have made so many lovely friends and feel very fortunate.
I have the talented Bibi Freeman to thank for putting me on this lovely creative path all those years ago and I turned my back on my corporate jobs and life and have never looked back since!
The Training Tried & Tested boards came about after realising that there was something else needed for myself and my fellow face painters. Did not know what it was, but just knew there had to be something! You will all hear the stories via social media how we have to bribe our children or partners in order to practice, and that paper is just not cutting it! For a while I used greaseproof paper which is clearly meant for baking! However worked really well with face paints – but this proved to be not so great on the environment and created a lot of waste over time! Also when chatting on the forums and chatting with my International friends – they have never heard of greaseproof paper, so this made for some very interesting conversations – lol. Also, it became apparent to me that we also practice late into the night! No children about then and the practice heads (which I have tried) just were not personally working for me.
My designer and I sat together and worked out the needs and requirements of what my fellow face painters would need – so we worked on sizing of the faces, so placement of sponges or one stroke work would work out virtually the same as it would when taking the designs to the face or body. Obviously the boards are flat, so this will never workout 100% but from the reviews they are receiving, I personally feel we have created what we set out to do.
The product that we have sourced is used in engineering and therefore is very hard wearing and I am not sure if you can even burn it – not that I have tried! It is also flexible and very easy to clean.
The paint works very well on the boards – but it does take slightly longer to dry if you are adding on top of a design – such as adding a double dipped flower on top of say, a princess crown, so allow a little extra drying time.
These boards also can be used for so many more mediums, such as make-up. Perfect for students and takes away the need to buy the paper face templates which can get costly, even if you photocopy them, this comes at a cost. We have all worked away on a design and then you make the ultimate mistake and have to start again and another screwed up piece of paper has to go in the bin! Well not with these boards – wipe away and start again, take a photo and put in your portfolio, ready to be marked by your tutor. Also great to show to your Clients and will look great if you need to send any images via email or via social media. I personally send to some my enquiries as it really shows of your designs to the max and will get you that booking!
Other mediums include: henna, glitter tattoos, special effects, poster paints and acrylic paints for all those ladies who love one stroke/folk art. Our Test board in the range is perfect for this and makes practicing and perfecting those all-important and loved roses, very easy to practice over and over again. If you get the placement wrong with say a leaf or petal, simply wipe that part away and paint over it. Nothing has to go in the bin with these boards.
We have so many designs now in the range, since relaunching in mid September and have some fantastic suppliers. Our ‘Chief in command’ is none other than Nathalie Farmer, CEO of The Face Painting Shop based in Essex and she has just won a very worthy business award. The Face Painting Shop is ‘the one stop shop for everything you could possibly need in the world of face painting and entertainment industry’. Nathalie has worked very closely with us and together have hand-picked some great distributors. Her understanding and knowledge in this area is second to none and her ability to get these products shipped out overseas in a matter of days is fantastic – just take a look at her reviews on her FB page, 100’s have taken the time to comment! We are looking forward to a very long and happy working relationship with her and her team.
With the help of Nathalie Farmer, another major supplier and leader in this profession, the fabulous Silly Farm Supplies in the USA who bring us the wonderful FABA TV channel where you can learn just about everything there is to know about face painting, henna, body painting, balloonists and even business advice! Heather Green CEO is another lady who provides us with all the skills we will ever need and her blogs on business advice should not be missed!
So which board to pick? This all depends on your needs as they all serve a purpose. However, I will we working on some descriptions and these will be posted on The Face Painting Shop’s website under each board, to help you decide which one(s) you would think would suit you best.
You have the perfect practice boards and the perfect display boards – all are fabulous and will get you those Clients!
Happy painting everybody.

Thank you for all the congratulations messages that we have received after winning our Best Women in Business Award, here is a little bit from what happened on the night and also a bit about the awards, we were so inspired by all the amazing business women we met at the on the night and were so proud to be named Best Retail and Consumer Business, we were also a finalist in for the Best Business Award (we are going back for that one next year :-) )
The Face Painting Shop has been named as the winner of Best Retail and Consumer Award in The Best Business Women Awards, a national competition for female entrepreneurs. 17 winners were selected from 60 finalists.. This annual competition seeks to recognise great women in the business community, who not only are making a difference in their own lives, but also in their local communities.
The founder of the awards Debbie Gilbert said ‘The Best Business Women awards are all about showcasing great businesswomen who are running a business around a family or commitments. The standard of entrants was very high so to be chosen as a winner is a major achievement’
The awards were presented at a gala final at Batchwood Hall in St Albans on 15th October where all winners and finalists enjoyed a 3 course meal and the award presentation.
We were so proud to be part of this amazing event and will continue to support these amazing awards.
Huge thank you to Debbie and her team for such a well organised event.
I am always asked “what are the must have special effects products I need in my kit?” So here goes......
There are some special effects staples you can’t do without, here is my personal take on what you need in your kit
Spirit Gum is an adhesive used to keep just about anything light-weight in place, including most small prosthetic and wax appliances. I always recommend that you put it on the area you’ll be placing your appliance rather than the appliance itself, and always work in small areas for the best chance of a firm adhesion. Spirit gum remover is exactly what it sounds like. You should always use spirit gum remover when taking off an appliance. Trust me, it’ll save you from experiencing a lot of pain and possibly ripping your appliance! All you have to do is put a little spirit gum remover under a brush or on a cotton bud and run it under your appliance starting from the edges. It will lift away nice and easy...
Liquid latex is the must have product my SFX kit, I simply can’t work without it at Halloween. This comes in clear and flesh tone colours. Latex allergies are rare but they can happen, always try to do a patch test on a small area – This is your warning!
If you are applying liquid latex to any area that has hair, I personally use barrier foam, Kryolan pro shield is a great product to use – this will stop the hair from being ripped out when removing. Because it is nice and thin, liquid latex is great for creating skin wound effects like blisters and decaying skin with ease.
No Halloween makeup is complete without blood! We stock a huge Varity of blood at the shop.
The three main types are stage blood, blood gel and blood paste. Stage blood is thin, bright red and runny which is great for superficial wounds and squirting effects, it goes on very thin and bright but dries crusty just like real blood. Blood gel is dark red and is used for deeper wounds and has a thicker consistency, this blood never dries and has a realistic drip to it. Finally, there is blood paste – which is my fav this blood is very thick, and will not run or dry. It is used to simulate coagulated blood found in very deep wounds or burns. This blood stays in place so it’s great for photos where you want the wound to remain static.
Other great products are, Fresh Scratch by Kryolan, ad also Wound Filler, always make sure you have plently of stipple sponges to hand too.
Special effects wax is a must have, for creating scars, cuts, slits, and any other effect where you require a 3d effect.
Always remember to apply spirit gum to the skin before you wax so that it stays in place.
Another great time when using wax is to, use some vasaline on the edge of your spatula, to help with blending into the skin.
The reason you MUST have a bruise wheel in your kit is that it will keep your makeup looking chalky when applied to latex, due to them being grease paint. The bruise wheels also blend very easy too. I also find it comes in handy outside of latex application, with wound creations and layering.
This is THE product for creating old and new scars
Collodion is a classic product for creation of simulated scars (also known as Scarring Material). Collodion, which dries extremely fast, is first coated onto the skin. The skin is then pressed together to form a fold. The optical impression of a scar results. The artificial scar can be colored with any bruise wheel or grease makeup. After being used, the skin should be treated with cream that contains fat, and the skin should be protected from being stressed.
And finally - a good fxinging spray, this will hold all your amazing work in place.
I hope this has helped as to what are the staples you need for the busy halloween season, if you have any questions you can leave a comment below, or email me firstname.lastname@example.org, or call me at the shop on 01375 768773
Happy Halloween :-)
