January – Time to build your business
So as face painters we automatically assume that January is going to be a quite month? This is not the case; children still have birthdays in January and have parties, so our services are needed.
There so many face painters telling me they have no work and are thinking of throwing in the towel. They are telling me this via Facebook, okay, so instead of wasting time on Facebook (we are all guilty of it) invest your time on creating more work for your business -Many face painters are fantastic artists but when it comes down to the business aspect they fall short.
After creating a very successful face painting business myself I know it’s hard work, I have spent endless days and nights on my laptop searching for new leads, email addresses, contacts, events, reading business books, you name it I have done it, my bad back pain was what put an end to my face painting business and spurred me to create the shop and here I am.
I personally find that many face painters rely on Facebook on their main source of advertising, there are many other ways of getting your business out there, and most of these can be updated via any smart phone.
My top tip – I cannot express how important this is start a blog! These are FREE one of my favs is Blogger.com, blog about your business, what you are doing, events you are attending, areas you cover, reviews of products, jams, training courses you are attending. Use this as an online business diary. I love to read blogs and know that there are only a handful of face painters that have them, so when you start your blog, send me the link so I can follow you.
List your business on free directory listings, this will help your website rank better on Google – Yell.com, free index, Thompson Local, Net Mums etc, there are tons out there – get listing.
Start to use Twitter, if you find it confusing, read up on how to use it; it’s pretty easy once you get going and can be a great tool for networking.
Instagram – This is an awesome app, sign up its FREE, and you will gain business from it should you use it correctly.
Illusion Magazine website is a great source for inspiration, browse the site and update your portfolio and website.
Check out Heather Greens "paint me Green blog", its just brilliant! - like and follow her page for amazing business tips and tricks.
Update your website at least once a week, this will help massively in your Google ranking. If you haven’t got a website – get one, there are plenty of FREE website available, if you can afford to pay someone to build you a website, do your research, even haggle with the web designer and get a great price.
Read some business books, your local library will have tons of books that will help you to build your business. You can also find some great articles on line – all free.
Network – Network with others apart from face painters, there are many other professions that face painters can team up with – bouncy castle hire companies, cake makers, entertainers, makeup artists, photographers, wedding planners, party planners, djs, restaurants, play centres – the list is endless – the list is endless, talk to all these people in your area, tell them about your business, drop them an email, send them your business card.
Business cards – carry them everywhere you go, talk to people/shop keepers/nursery ask them if it’s okay to leave a pile of cards, you never know who might pick one up. We have an amazing printing service now at The Face Painting Shop, so if you are in need of new business stationary get in contact with Tommy – firstname.lastname@example.org, he can even help you with design.
My plea to you all is to start blogging in 2014, send me the links so that I can follow your blogs too.
I am 100% behind every face painter on the planet, if I can help any of you in any way to build your business get in contact with me, I’m pretty easy to get hold of :-)

I have found a new love!!
When it comes to cleaning brushes, you should always give them a shampoo to keep them clean, and prevent spreading bacteria back on to your skin.
If you don't clean them regularly, the dead skin cells build up between the bristles, as does the bacteria & this causes your skin to breakout.
There are various products on the market to wash your brushes in, but over the years I have come across some that just don't cut it; they are either overly perfumed or the 'little goes a long way' products take forever to wash out as they're too concertrated.
You have to be careful not to dunk the entire brush into the water in-order to remove the soap as this can losen the glue within the ferrule, which holds the bristles together.
This new soap bar from 'Cameleon Professional Face & Bodypaint' is fabulous!!
*100% Vegtable oil based conditioning soap*
Not only is this soap perfect for brushes AND cosmetic sponges, you can only use it on your skin to remove all traces of face & bodypaint!!
It has a pleasent yet subtle Lemony fresh scent, and it comes in a plastic pot which is ideal as you can hold the product while you swirl your brush on it without losing you grip on the soap - We know what thats like, trying to catch it as it swishes around the sink bowl.
You simply dampen your brush / sponge, and then swipe it over the soap once or twice - this is all you need!
Then using your fingers lather the bristles into a foamy consistancy.
If your brushes are really dirty, you'll see your lather change colour due to the makeup - Feel ashamed! Lol..
Give them a little swirl in the clean water, taking care not to dip in the brush ferrule, and the soap literally washes away without any resisdue or fuss!
The bristles are left looking clean and smelling fresh!
This is a MUST buy for anyone who owns makeup brushes!!
You can purchase this product from The Face Painting Shop www.thefacepaintingshop.com for an inroductory price of £5.49
