Make Up Palettes
Make up palettes are a good addition to our face painting kits, especially with festival and wedding season upon us. Teens and pre-teens love the look of an open make-up box and have even asked for selfies with my hard-to-obtain palette by a famous Instagram MUA.
They look pretty but do they deliver? And what do us face painters need in a make up palette?
Festivals – A Quick Guide
By Joni Nettleship
Do you do them? If so, do you pay pitch fees? How much? Is it pay per face and how much do you charge? How long do you paint for and what time do you pack away? Do you paint after sunset?
Festival season is looming and you need to keep your wits about you if you want to remain sane and end up with a profit. I..
Keeping It Simple
By Joni Nettleship
We all want to paint fast, easy faces and as a busy face painter I need my designs to be done in 2-5 minutes. All these photos are on the job and were done super quick. I didn’t use any one strokes at all, I love one strokes but spend too long loading the things. When I really have to knock out a design I prefer metallic and pearl paints, rai..
The Life of a Face Painter (continued)
Friday evening and it’s an office job – painting for a charity fundraiser, the place is nice and the people who booked me are lovely, I’m offered Prosecco and as much food as I can take home. A few women come to get glittered and as the drink flows the men approach. They ask for the usual silly things whi..
Product Review: Lick and Lashes pigment powder in cobalt
I admit it, I’ve always been a bit scared of powder pigments, they’re loose and well, powdery, and dry bottled make up intimidates me big style… like.. how much should you put on your brush? What if I tip up the jar? And oh no look at all the fallout…
But in the spirit of challenging myself I tri..
A WEEKEND IN THE LIFE OF A FACE PAINTER
It’s an after-school kids’ party at a restaurant that has a soft play area, the place is closed to the public and the mums sit at the bar drinking wine, the children are excited and queue up for their numbers, I get to the promised 20 expecting an extra 2 or 3 but today it’s ok, no surpr..
Face Painting and Prosecco Nights
Bit bored with kids’ parties? Enjoy helping people? Like some extra income? You could try throwing a ‘Face Paint and Prosecco’ evening for adults. A while ago I noticed the trend for night time cocktail and craft parties and crochet and chat nights, they seemed popular, a chance for people to get out the house, socialise and learn a new ski..
TOP 5 BRUSHES
There are so many makes, sizes and shapes of brushes, it can sometimes be hard to know what to buy, especially when first starting out. Here are my top five favourite brushes:
Jestpaint ‘Bolt’ brushes. These little yellow handled pieces of genius have a particularly bulbous brush so make perfect thin to thick lines. They take some ..
SMASHING GENDER STEREOTYPES
How do you deal with it? The icky parent who overturns their son’s request for a unicorn or rejects their daughter’s desire to be a superhero because it just doesn’t fit with their ideas of gender identity.
In their first years all children love colour – both male and female toddlers love rainbows, flowe..
OOH! Look What’s New!
I love a good stencil. Who doesn’t? They’re life-savers at busy events and can add a bit of wow to your everyday designs. I’ve blogged about stencils before but I wanted to introduce you to my new favourites (and I haven’t been paid to say this, as usual my blogs are truthful and objective) a range of easy to use and ..
“How much should I charge for face painting?”
This question crops up time and time and time again on Facebook groups. So how much do YOU charge? I bet it’s more now than when you started, but how did you come up with your initial rate?
Most people look around at what other face painters in their area are doing and charge a bit les..
HOW TO SURVIVE NEW YEAR’S EVE
Have you agreed to face paint on New Year’s Eve? Here’s a guide to getting the most from your last and first booking of the year.
1. Set the highest rate possible or charge per face. PPF is highly profitable on New Year’s Eve when people are determined to have a good time, but don’t restrict yourself to face paint, glitt..
Frankenstein, mermaid, snake, dinosaur, leaves…which is the right green for the job? When it comes to green face paint there are so many different shades and it’s essential to get it right, after all no one wants a shimmery mint Hulk.
Here’s a guide to the best greens for the most popular on-the-job faces;
Mermaid – this is all abo..
Making Your Own Rainbow Cakes
Making your own rainbow cakes isn’t as hard as you might think and once you start it’s pretty hard to stop, you can create the colour blends you want and it’s satisfying seeing the amount of cakes you can get from just a few solid colours. It’s a good way to use up any spare paint and if you haven’t got any empty containers just use lids.
A few weeks ago I wrote about how you can add to your income by running children’s ‘learn to face paint’ workshops. This week I’m talking about teaching gore and sfx because kids ABSOLUTELY LOVE it no matter the time of year. There are several reasons why your workshops will be a success;
Children are fascinated by blood and yucky stuff and ar..
